What is Inner Child work?

The concept of an Inner Child has its origins in psychoanalysis (Carl Gustav Jung, 1940). The way it is used in modern psychology is to refer to patterns of emotions and beliefs that you developed in your childhood. These patterns still influence your experience or response as an adult. They may or may not be logical from an adult perspective. Your ‘system’ may be projecting childhood experiences onto and into your adult life.

Working with your inner child is about detecting, exploring and unpacking these experiences to understand them and in some cases to integrate the ‘inner child’ into the adult.

There are various therapeutic approaches and methods that work with the inner child, including transactional analysis, voice dialogue, schema therapy, family constellations / systemic work and body-oriented work.

The Clean Inner Child Process

What is Clean about this approach, is that when working with the client, the facilitator asks only clean non leading questions and thereby does not impose an adult logic nor the facilitators epistemology onto the client.

We do not start from a generic construct of the inner child. We work with what is real and current for the client. We also work with metaphors, which can create some distance between the work and the original experience. Changes in the metaphor correspond to changes in the clients’ lived experience.

This way, people don't have to 'relive' unpleasant past experiences. Another way we offer the client a high degree of security is that they are 'in the driver's seat'. The clean facilitator doesn’t analyse or steer the session towards specific conclusions. They follow the clients interest and the clients interpretations.

After all, with a Clean stance, we aim to influence as little as possible. The pattern or behavior has an origin and a function for the client, so we operate respectfully. Clean work also lends itself to working content free so your facilitator never needs to know what happened in your past which is important for some people.

The Location

We have found a beautiful space De Holdeurn, that can serve as both a great place to do the work and as a place with plenty of room for everyone to stay.

De Holdeurn

The space consists of 5 apartments, each with two double rooms, a bathroom, a living room, and a kitchen. There is a sixth house that serves as the communal space for our meals, training, and evening fun.
